If you are going to travel within the EU, you need to take out third-party motor liability insurance for your vehicle if it is an ordinary motor vehicle purchased in Poland. You may also need a Green Card if you move from country to country.
In which countries the Polish Third Party Liability Insurance is valid
Ordinary motor third party liability insurance purchased from an insurance company operating in the country is valid in Poland and on the roads.
The multilateral agreement stipulates that a vehicle with a valid registration must have third party liability insurance with a certain period of validity. It is better, though, to take out, or rather get, a document confirming the purchase of the insurance from the insurance company located in Poland. In some cases, this information is written on the document and will help you in case of an accident.
If you intend to visit several European countries, you’ll most likely need to purchase a Green Card – Border Liability Insurance.
The Green Card is an international-style certificate that proves you have a valid AGP. It is not considered supplementary insurance – it is a document issued by the insurance company where the AGP policy was purchased, confirming that in the event of damage outside the country, it will cover the victim’s legal claims. This type of document can be obtained prior to the expiry date of the national AGP policy. To date, GC may be required in the following countries:
Important! The list of countries is subject to change, some countries may join the Multilateral Agreement, or in the case of withdrawal from the Green Card system. Check the current requirements before you leave the country.
It is not possible to obtain the Green Card at the border or abroad. In some countries, this document is checked at border crossings. If a traveler does not possess one, he or she will have to acquire one, but it is worth considering that it may be costly. In most cases, it is a policy for a short period of 14 to 30 days. You have to pay a few dozen euros for it. Lack of insurance entails much higher costs.
In most countries bound to Poland by an insurance contract, the guarantee amount is different from that in your country. If a claim is settled outside the country and corresponds to the Polish policy, the insurance company will accept the warranty amount valid in the place of accident. If it is lower than in Poland, the limit set in Poland is taken into account.
